Megapolis Festival 2010 Roundup

Megapolis 2010 is over! The final generation is <a href="http://soundcloud.com/republic-of-nynex/megapolis-2010-terminal-generation">here</a>. Here are the future plans for this project:
- I am going to make a web-only version and reduce the frequency to a daily run.
- A new generation will only advance once there are at least 5 ratings for EACH member of the current generation.
- The installation version will play compositions when idle instead of waiting for a click to play it anew.
- Change the scoring algorithm to sort samples by age and use their order in the sorted sequence as the score, instead of their raw recency. This will stop a phenomenon I noticed late in the game where having a bunch of samples that were 6 years old making the skew towards newer material practically invisible.
- Normalize scores and do a single roulette wheel selection with the chance of a sample being selected proportional to its score. Currently the mutation operator picks a random sample with a uniform distribution and then uses its score to decide whether to pick again.
- Come up with some objective component to the fitness operator in addition to user ratings.

Ready for Megapolis

I have completed the final install of the Nynex software and all dependencies on the kiosk machine. Although the software has its flaws, I won&#8217;t be making any more changes until festival time! I&#8217;ve received a request regarding another live outing of the project in a performance context, but for the moment all focus is on MEGAPOLIS! Baltimore, look out!

If you have been following the project on SoundCloud or Twitter, you will have noticed the appearance of actual output. This is the final stretch to Megapolis. The Google Voice and upload handlers are complete. You can call the number to leave a message and the message will be absorbed.

I started writing actual code as opposed to designs and specs. Exciting! Once I get a test case running, I&#8217;ll be sure to post it.

Progress Blog Initialized

Hey everyone, welcome to the Republic of Nynex progress blog! So far, there is not a whole lot of progress. If you aren&#8217;t following my git commits, here is the lowdown:

I&#8217;ve created an XCode project based on an openFrameworks example project and created modules for the different logical sections of code: SoundCloud, Twitter, Google Voice, voting, evolving, and UI. I&#8217;m just starting to create all the class interfaces for the non-fs1rgen sections. Once that&#8217;s complete, I will begin implementing the C++ parts, just enough to get to the point of making some noise.
